José van Dijck is a resident KNIR fellow in early spring 2019. During her stay in Rome she teaches a Masterclass on “Social Media and Political Governance: Rome, Italy, Europe”, and organises activities relating to her current research interests, particular concerning the platform society, connectivity and social media.

José van Dijck is distinguished university professor at Utrecht University. Her field is media studies and her work covers media and communication technologies, social media, and digital culture. She has authored and edited ten books and over one hundred articles. Her book The Culture of ConnectivityA Critical History of Social Media (Oxford University Press, 2013) was also translated into Spanish and Chinese. Her latest book, titled The Platform Society. Public Values in a Connective World (Oxford UP, 2018) is co-authored with Thomas Poell and Martijn de Waal.

Van Dijck received her PhD from the University of California, San Diego (USA). She was Chair of the Department of Media Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam between 2001 and 2012. From 2015 and 2018, she served as President of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Her visiting appointments include the Annenberg School for Communication (Philadelphia), MIT (Cambridge, USA), Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta), the University of Technology in Sydney (Australia), and Stockholm University (2017).
