My project explores the epistemic function of manuals for martial exercises from Italy and the Holy Roman Empire between 1400 and 1550. These books seemingly lack a straightforward text, mostly comprising brief instructions for martial techniques, at times accompanied by illustrations. Understanding their workings then requires analysing how they related to experimental practice and early modern ideas about knowledge, experience and the senses.
