His current doctoral research (RICH/HLCS, 2018-2022) focusses on the role of charitable institutions and the care for the body in late antique and middle Byzantine urban centres. Within this project, special attention is given to the role of gender, class, and rituals as both creators and markers of social boundaries in the urban landscape. The project is an affiliated PhD-project at the KNIR.

In 2020 he also acted as one of the co-ordinators of OIKOS, the Dutch National Research School in Classical Studies.
