Het Fotoarchief Adriaan Luijdjens betreft een verzameling van enkele honderden foto’s bewaard uit de nalatenschap van Adriaan (Adriano) Luijdjens (1900-1991). Luijdjens kwam in 1925 in Rome, waar hij onder meer werkte als dagbladcorrespondent voor verschillende Nederlandse kranten en persoonlijk secretaris van kunsthistoricus G.J. Hoogewerff, directeur van het Nederlands Historisch Instituut (het huidige KNIR). Tevens was Luijdjens oprichter en lange tijd voorzitter van de Nederlands-Italiaanse vereniging. Hij overleed op 2 maart 1991 te Rome.
De fotoverzameling van Luijdjens is zeer divers en aantrekkelijk in haar schoonheid en diversiteit. Zo zijn er zwart-wit foto’s uit de periode 1890-1930. Er zitten vele foto’s tussen die gemaakt zijn door bekende fotografen als de Gebroeders Alinari uit Florence en Anderson, Moscioni en Adolfo Porry-Pastorel uit Rome. Er zijn tevens foto’s uit het Archivio Fotografico Nazionale en het Istituto Nazionale L.U.C.E. Veelal betreft het foto’s van belangrijke monumenten uit de antieke oudheid en reproducties van kunstwerken die te zien zijn in Italiaanse musea. Daarnaast zijn er persfoto’s, zoals bijvoorbeeld van het bezoek van het toenmalige koningspaar Juliana en Bernhard aan Rome, of de werkzaamheden van de regisseur Luchino Visconti. Tenslotte bevat de collectie foto’s en bijbehorende negatieven, gemaakt door Luijdjens zelf her en der in Italië en in Noord Afrika.
In 2022-2024 is de collectie geïnventariseerd door Jan Bernard Gijsman en wordt deze nu beschreven in een databestand. In de toekomst zullen de foto’s gescand worden en worden ze toegankelijk gemaakt op de website van het KNIR. Afgezien van deze visuele bronnen met betrekking tot de geschiedenis van Rome en het KNIR is het overige archief van Luijdjens in 2014 overgedragen aan het Persmuseum in Nederland en bevindt zich nu in het Internationaal Institut voor Sociale Geschiedenis in Amsterdam.
Tentoonstelling Portabandiera di Siena, 3 juni – 31 juli 2024
Deze tijdelijke tentoonstelling toont twaalf zwart-wit foto’s uit het Luijdjens archief van de zogenaamde portabandiera (vaandeldragers) van de verschillende wijken in Siena, die deelnemen aan de beroemde Palio. De foto’s zijn gemaakt rond 1900-1910 door een onbekende fotograaf van de studio Lombardi in Siena. Naast de foto’s zijn acht kleuransichtkaarten uit de serie I 17 Paggi delle Storiche Contrade di Siena uit 1910 tentoongesteld, eveneens uit de collectie van het KNIR. Deze kaarten geven een kleurrijk inzicht in de historische context en voegen visuele diversiteit toe aan de expositie.
Uit het onderzoek van Jan Bernard Gijsman met behulp van Martina Bartoli en twaalf musea in Siena die elk een eigen wijk representeren konden de foto’s worden gedateerd. Eveneens bleek dat de portabandiera Giulio Nepi van de contrada Torre hier te zien is in een kostuum uit 1879. Hij droeg dit ter gelegenheid van de begrafenis van Koning Umberto I in 1900.

One of the special collections of the library of the KNIR is a collection of several hundred photos preserved from the estate of Adriaan (Adriano) Luijdjens (1900-1991). Luijdjens arrived in Rome in 1925, where he worked as a correspondent for various Dutch newspapers and personal secretary of art historian prof. G.J. Hoogewerff, director of the Netherlands Historical Institute (now KNIR). Luijdjens was also the founder and long-time chairman of the Dutch-Italian Association. He spent the rest of his life in Rome, where he passed away on March 2, 1991.
The photo collection of Luijdjens is very diverse and attractive in its beauty and variety. It includes many black and white photos from the period 1890-1930. Among them are many photos taken by well-known photographers such as the Alinari Brothers from Florence and Anderson, Moscioni, and Adolfo Porry-Pastorel from Rome. There are also photos from the Archivio Fotografico Nazionale and the Istituto Nazionale L.U.C.E. These mostly concern photos of important monuments from antiquity and reproductions of artworks in Italian museums. Additionally, there are press photos, such as the visit of the royal couple of the Netherlands, Juliana and Bernhard, to Rome, or the work of director Luchino Visconti. Finally, the collection contains photos and corresponding negatives taken by Luijdjens himself in various parts of Italy and North Africa.
In 2022-2024, the collection has been inventoried mainly by Jan Bernard Gijsman and is now being described in a database. In the future, the photos will be scanned and made accessible on the KNIR website. Apart from these visual sources related to the history of Rome and the KNIR, the remaining Luijdjens archive was transferred to the Press Museum in the Netherlands in 2014 and is now kept in the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam.
Exhibition Portabandiera di Siena, June 3 – July 31, 2024
This temporary exhibition showcases twelve black-and-white photos of the so-called portabandiera (standard-bearers) from the different districts in Siena, who participate in the famous Palio. The photos were taken around 1900-1910 by an unknown photographer in the Sienese photo studio Lombardi. In addition to the photos, eight color postcards from the series I 17 Paggi delle Storiche Contrade di Siena from 1910 are displayed. These cards from the KNIR collections provide colorful insights into the historical context and add visual diversity to the exhibition.
Thanks to the research by Jan Bernard Gijsman, with the help of library intern Martina Bartoli and twelve museums in Siena each representing a different district, the photos could be dated approximatively. It was also found that the portabandiera Giulio Nepi from the Torre district is seen in a costume from 1879, which he wore at the funeral of King Umberto I in 1900.

come corrispondente per vari giornali olandesi e segretario personale dello storico dell’arte G.J. Hoogewerff, direttore dell’Istituto Storico Neerlandese (ora KNIR). Luijdjens fu anche il fondatore e il lungo tempo presidente dell’Associazione Italo-Olandese. È rimasto il resto della sua vita a Roma, dove morì il 2 marzo 1991.
La collezione fotografica di Luijdjens è molto diversificata e attraente nella sua bellezza e varietà. Include tante foto in bianco e nero del periodo 1890-1920. Tra queste ci sono molte foto scattate da fotografi noti come i Fratelli Alinari di Firenze e Anderson, Moscioni e Adolfo Porry-Pastorel di Roma. Ci sono anche foto dell’Archivio Fotografico Nazionale e dell’Istituto Nazionale L.U.C.E. Queste riguardano principalmente foto di importanti monumenti dell’antichità e riproduzioni di opere d’arte presenti nei musei italiani. Inoltre, ci sono foto di stampa, come la visita della coppia reale neerlandese, Juliana e Bernhard, a Roma, o il lavoro del regista Luchino Visconti. Infine, la collezione contiene foto e i negativi corrispondenti scattati dallo stesso Luijdjens in varie parti d’Italia e del Nord Africa.
Nel 2022-2024, la collezione è stata inventariata dal volontariato della biblioteca, Jan Bernard Gijsman, e ora viene descritta in un database. In futuro, le foto saranno scansionate e rese accessibili sul sito web del KNIR. A parte queste fonti visive relative alla storia di Roma e del KNIR, il restante archivio di Luijdjens è stato trasferito al Museo della Stampa nei Paesi Bassi nel 2014 e si trova ora presso l’Istituto Internazionale per la Storia Sociale ad Amsterdam.
Mostra Portabandiera di Siena, 3 giugno – 31 luglio 2024
Questa mostra temporanea presenta dodici foto in bianco e nero dei cosiddetti portabandiera delle diverse contrade di Siena, che partecipano al famoso Palio. Le foto sono state scattate intorno al 1900-1910 da un fotografo sconosciuto nello studio fotografico Lombardi a Siena. Oltre alle foto, sono esposte otto cartoline a colori della serie I 17 Paggi delle Storiche Contrade di Siena del 1910. Queste forniscono una visione colorata del contesto storico e aggiungono diversità visiva alla mostra.
La ricerca di Jan Bernard Gijsman, con l’aiuto della tirocinante della biblioteca, Martina Bartoli, e di dodici musei di Siena che rappresentano ciascuno una diversa contrada, ha permesso di datare le foto approssimativamente. Si è anche scoperto che il portabandiera Giulio Nepi della contrada Torre è visto qui in un costume del 1879, che indossò in occasione del funerale del re Umberto I nel 1900.
