Scholarships for external PhD students

Are you a PhD student with a supervisor from one of the six Dutch universities represented in the board of the KNIR and are you working on a PhD project at one of these universities in your own time, without any external funding? If so, you are eligible for a KNIR scholarship for external PhD students.

The scholarship consists of
1. free lodging at the KNIR for a period of 10 weeks;
2. a weekly allowance of up to €175,- for your general  expenses during your stay in Rome;
3. a one-time reimbursement of €100,- for your travelling expenses to Rome (or €125,- for those who travel by train).

The standard length of the KNIR Scholarship for external PhD students is 10 weeks. In case you are writing your PhD thesis alongside a job/occupation that makes it impossible to come to Rome for ten weeks, a shorter period can be requested in the application portal. External PhD students can apply for a maximum of 20 weeks in total during their PhD trajectory. For additional weeks they can send in a request for paid accommodation at the Institute.

Application requirements
1. you are preparing a PhD thesis that you will defend at one of the following Dutch universities: University of Groningen, Leiden University, University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University, VU University Amsterdam and Radboud University Nijmegen;
2. you can demonstrate that a stay at the KNIR will benefit your PhD research;
3. you do not have other funds or income and are available full-time during the period of your scholarship (if you do have other funds or income, the weekly allowance and reimbursement for travel will be adjusted accordingly).

If your PhD supervisor is not affiliated with one of the six Dutch universities associated with the Institute, you cannot apply for a KNIR scholarship, but you can send in a request for paid accommodation at the Institute.

How to apply?
The next deadline for applications is 15 May 2025 for the fall semester of 2025. You can apply via the form that will be available on this page approximately six weeks in advance. The exact dates of the scholarship period, the opening of the application portal and successive deadlines will be published here and announced in our monthly newsletter.

When selecting applicants, we look at your motivation, the benefit of a stay at the KNIR for your research, the quality of your research proposal, your CV, and your contribution to the KNIR academic community.

The results of the selection process will follow no later than one month after the deadline. Please note that the decision of the selection committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into. If your scholarship is granted, you are asked to confirm acceptance of the grant and the conditions that come with it within one week.
