Max Peers is a PhD candidate in the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University, and an associated researcher at Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) for the academic year 22-23. His research focuses on the impact of architecture and urban design on the identity, memory, and related social constructs of inhabitants of ancient cities.

As an associated researcher in the KNIR, Max is working to complete his dissertation, entitled “Building Community: Architecture and the Formation of Urban Communities in the Roman Central Mediterranean.” His dissertation project examines Roman cities of Sicily, Sardinia, and Tunisia, and adopts a holistic approach to their urban and architectural histories to better understand how built environments were formed by and subsequently maintained communities at different scales over the course of their history.

Max received his BA with honours in Classics and Archaeology from the University of Toronto, and his MA in Classical Archaeology from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Max is currently excavating with the University of Cincinnati’s Tharros Archaeological Research Project, and is contributing to the publication of the American Excavations at Morgantina: Contrada Agnese Project. Max has also previously been involved in excavations and related archaeological work in Italy, Greece, Jordan, and Israel.
