Title research: Revisiting the Invention of Africa: African alterity in Dutch culture in the long seventeenth century (1590-1720).
This project argues that early modern Dutch imaginations of Africa were crucial in creating stereotypes that persisted for centuries. To understand the origins of this “African alterity” in the seventeenth century, it proposes a comparative analysis of Dutch representations with earlier Iberian and Italian works on Africa, particularly those published in Rome under the auspices of the Capuchin Order and the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide.
