Title research: Re-shaping the Vatican Angelo Rocca and his circle restoring the papal authority under Sixtus V.
Angelo Rocca and his circle restored papal power through architecture, art and scholarship in the Vatican and supported the authority of Sixtus V as Saint Peter’s successor and as secular ruler of the Papal States. Rocca and his circle ‘translated’ Sixtus V’ ideologies into a program anchoring the Peretti-pope's authority at the historical heart of the papacy: the Vatican Palace and Saint Peters, shown in nine artworks in the Sistine Library.
