Sjoerd obtained his bachelor’s degree in History from Leiden University and is currently a student at the University of Amsterdam. He focusses mainly on the early modern history of cities, knowledge and enslavement and is right now writing his thesis on the development of the Dutch colony Berbice in the early eighteenth century. During his bachelor and master, he attended multiple courses at the Institute in Rome. He was part of the Minor Italian Art and History, organized together with the NIKI in Florence (2019), attended the colloquium ‘Mapping Uncertainty’ (2022), followed the ‘Heritage and Memory Theory Seminar’ (2022) and the ‘Spring Course: Cultures of Science and Art in Rome’ (2023).
